‘I Can’t - I Have Rehearsal’ (with composer-lyricist Julian Hay)

for a Musical Web Series Pilot

In 2012 I attended a NZ Actors’ Equity workshop with Australian Musical Theatre director Daniel Edmonds and actor Simon Burke, and was given the chance to workshop an original musical theatre piece I had written for a comedic character who was obsessed with singing in voted competitions on the internet. Fast forward to 2014, I had begun talking to local director Rowan Strang about making some comedic musical theatre themed video content when Script to Screen announced a Web Series Pitching workshop with producers Kerry Warkia & Kiel McNaughton (Auckland Daze/Flat 3 Web Series). Rowan and I attended the workshop. I pitched a musical themed idea, and things took off from there, with Kerry & Kiel kindly offering us mentoring through the process of making a pilot for a funding application. Local composer/musician Julian Hay joined our co-producing team along with choreographer Cameron Mason, and with the generous help of over 50 people, organisations and businesses from the Arts & Business communities (thank you!) we put together the following pilot. In 2015, ‘A Long Way From Broadway’ subsequently made the finals of the SPADA/South Pacific Pictures Big Pitch. This song was co-written by myself and Julian Hay, and arranged by Julian.
